MAY CROWNING

The all-school evening crowning of Mary took place on May 9th at 7:00 in the church.  With our pastor Fr. Marc presiding, the second graders in their communion outfits and the graduates led the procession into church.  The 8th graders served as commentators and prayer leaders for the community as they prayed the Rosary.

Recycling Fair

On Friday,  May 30, 2008, St. Patricia School in Hickory Hills held it’s annual Recycling Fair.  Under the guidance of Mrs. Casper, the 6th grade class shared their ideas for solutions to the problem of unnecessary waste.

Mayor Howley,  mayor of Hickory Hills, attended the event and handed out the certificates to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of categories such as “most unique idea” and “most useful”.

Nicole Vlasic (pictured with Mayor Howley) won the award for “Most Original”.

Thomas Matonis and his beautiful disco ball made up of old cd’s also won an award.

Budding Artists

Jacob Stypula, 6th grade created this picture using Matisses’ Scissorsart method of cutting colored shapes to recreate an original artowork.

Jacob can be seen beginning his artwork and making decisions about colors to cut from magazines.

Bianca Zavala recreated a Matisse painting for her scissorsart project.

Both of these artworks took over a month of art class time.

Student Council Visits Rosary Hill

Members of the St. Patricia Student Council visited Rosary Hill Home on Monday April 28th.  Students performed in a talent show, conducted a raffle, and played Bingo with a number of the residents.  It was an emotional and moving day for both the children and the seniors. Thanks to all students, teachers, and parents who donated prizes.  A special thank you to Mrs. Hamel who knitted “angels” for the seniors.  One resident commented, “This was the best group that has visited.”  Well, the students think you are special too!

Celebrating Arbor Day

St. Patricia students from grades 5 through 8 participated in a voluntary afterschool project for the City of Hickory Hills Beautification Committee to celebrate Arbor Day.

We were given 7-12” flower pots to decorate with Arbor Day or Earth Day as the theme.  Our students painted one flower pot for each day of creation. The students, under the guidance of Mrs. Johnson, put in their own time after school and worked hard to plan, draw and paint their creations. The student volunteers were:

1st day of creation: (8th grade)  Mallorie K, Kara K, Sheila D, and Nicole K.

2nd day of creation:  (8th grade)  Dan P.

3rd day of creation:   (7th grade) Chelsea H, Hayley T. and Laura F.

4th day of creation:  (6th grade)  Bianca Z, Jimmy K. and David R.

5th day of creation: (6th grade) Casey O, Austin K, Jacob S, Thomas M. and Mary D.

6th day of creation:  (7th grade)  Katy P, Dee M, Toni M, Emily F. and Molly A.

7th day of creation:  (5th grade)  Kyla F, Sandra A, Catherine N, Jimmy K, Tommy P, Inez G, Lucas M. and Zach S.

Special thanks go out to Megan Johnson (graduate of St. Patricia and currently working on teaching degree) for coming in to help for 3 days and Mrs. Przybylski who also came to help the students.

On Saturday, May 3, 2008, the City of Hickory Hills celebrated Arbor Day by placing the flower pots in the park by City Hall and in front of City Hall.  The Mayor handing out certificates to those students who participated in decorating the flower pots.  Several of the artists and their parents were there for the event which included planting flowers in the flower pots and the selling of trees and shrubs to the residents of Hickory Hills for discounted prices.  The mayor said that they are thinking of auctioning the flower pots at the end of the summer season and giving the money to the schools that participated to aid in art supplies.  We are proud of our students and their parents for investing their own time into this worthy endeavor.
